Case Studies

Below is an excerpt of case studies representing various Tedopres customers in various industries:

Black & Decker

black & decker power toolBlack & Decker is a global marketer and manufacturer of quality products used in and around the home. The company is the world’s largest producer of power tools and accessories. Its household products business is the U.S. leader and among the top global competitors in the small household appliance industry. With products marketed in over 100 countries and approximately half of its revenue from outside the United States, Black & Decker holds leading market share positions in its industry.

Since 2000 Tedopres has been responsible for the creation and management of the instruction manuals for Black & Decker products for the European market. Thanks to efficient automated processing and a clever re-use of available data, the manuals are produced fast and at a low cost. By applying XML technology, a cost reduction of 60% was realized in the publication process, reducing the total cost per manual by another 30%.

The core structure of each manual comprises blocks of standard text that are made available for all applicable languages by utilizing an intelligent database. Thus, the creation of content is limited to writing the instructions for the product-specific functionalities. Most manuals are translated into 13 languages, using translation memory software. Each language has its own translation memory which detects previously translated sentences and presents them to the translator for possible re-use. As the standard text has been locked and frequent segments have been pre-translated, the translation work mainly entails newly created text.

In the publishing process, a stylesheet (template) is used to publish the manual according to a standard structure. The illustrations are placed in the front section, followed by the text in the different languages. The publication is an almost fully automated process: by working with so-called tags in the authoring stage, the layout of the text has been pre-defined. Only minor manual adjustments are required.
